West Nile Virus - Protect Yourself!
West Nile virus is a virus mainly transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito.Mosquitoes transmit the virus after becoming infected by feeding on the blood of birds which carry the virus.
Most people that become infected with the virus usually have no symptoms or mild flu-like symptoms. Sometimes though, the virus can cause severe illness, resulting in hospitalization and even death so it is important to know the symptoms of illness related to infection and how to minimize your risk, especially if virus activity is reported in an area near you.
What Can You Do?
1. The Public Health Agency of Canada coordinates national surveillance and response to West Nile virus. Visit the Canadian Public Health Agency website for guidelines on Personal Insect Repellents
2. Remove standing water from your property that may build up in old tires, toys, pots etc that may be stored or discarded in areas. Spray area with Virkon 1% solution as per directions on container, rinsing not required as product is not toxic. Retreat areas after rainfall occurs and water build up again.
3. Treat standing water that is undrainable with Virkon Disinfectant as per directions.
4. Utilize Virkon on surfaces to disinfect countertops, clean floors etc for a complete disinfection. See disinfection chart
